After injection, the medication enters the bloodstream, reaching its maximum concentration in just 0.5 to 3 hours. The active ingredient primarily accumulates in the spleen and liver, and may also be present in the genitals. When to use

The sterile solution can be given to pets in various ways:

  • intramuscularly;
  • subcutaneously;
  • intravenously;
  • orally.

Fosprenil for dogs

Fosprenil can be used for eye and nasal irrigation, but in this case, it is diluted with clean water in a 1:1 ratio. For greater effectiveness, the medication is administered intramuscularly. Intravenous injections are preferred in severe cases to achieve the fastest possible effect.

Doses and treatment regimens

The Fosprenil dosage for dogs is calculated based on the animal's weight: 0.1 ml per 1 kg of body weight. For severe conditions, the dose is doubled. If a large volume of the medication is required, it is recommended to administer it to multiple sites. For oral administration, the dose is doubled.

The treatment regimen may vary depending on the pathology:

  1. If an animal is diagnosed with infectious peritonitis or plague and the disease is severe, the drug is administered four times a day (every six hours) for the first two days, then three times a day, eight hours apart, for a week. Then, two injections are given for two days, and one injection for the next two days. This regimen is followed even if symptoms have resolved.
  2. For moderate cases of plague, as well as hepatitis and enteritis, the animal is given four injections at six-hour intervals on the first day. Then, for a week, injections are given three times a day, followed by two injections for two more days, and then one injection for two more days.
  3. If infectious diseases are mild, the animal is given three doses on the first day. On the second day, two doses, 12 hours apart, are sufficient, and on the third, one dose is sufficient. Treatment duration may be extended to 5-7 days, depending on the pet's condition.
  4. In case of plague, the duration of treatment is at least 14 days, regardless of the animal’s condition.

Features of application

The treatment regimen may be modified by the veterinarian depending on the dog's condition, body characteristics, and presenting symptoms. To achieve the fastest possible therapeutic effect and avoid potential complications, Fosprenil is combined with antibacterial and antihistamine medications, as well as medications that promote detoxification, restore fluid and electrolyte balance, and alleviate symptoms. To enhance the therapeutic effect, it is combined with interferon; however, additional immunostimulants are generally not required.

To prevent infectious diseases, the medication is administered to animals as a single dose. The dosage remains the same as for treatment. Preventive measures are used in the following cases:

  • during epidemic outbreaks;
  • when traveling to a region with a high risk threshold;
  • when in contact with sick animals.

To strengthen the immune system vaccinations The medication is also administered as a single dose at the doses listed above. No additional medication is required for booster vaccinations. The medication is administered simultaneously with the vaccine, but at different sites.

Vaccination for a dog

It is not recommended to skip medication doses. This will inevitably reduce its effectiveness. If a timely dose is missed, administer the medication as soon as possible and then resume the current treatment regimen.

Although Fosprenil is considered a safe medication, it should not be used without consulting a doctor. Furthermore, it is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which should only be prescribed by a veterinarian.

Contraindications and side effects

Contraindications for Fosprenil include hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. If an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue use and choose an alternative medication. To alleviate any unpleasant symptoms, give your dog antihistamines.

Do not give medication containing hydrocortisone, dexazone, or other anti-inflammatory steroid drugs.

According to the instructions, Fosprenil is well-tolerated by dogs and does not cause any side effects. Occasionally, a slight increase in temperature, lethargy, and increased heart rate may occur. Symptoms usually resolve on their own. If the reaction persists within two days, consult a veterinarian.

Owner reviews

Irina, owner of a 3-month-old puppy:

"I learned about Fosprenil from a breeder I know. She uses it for vaccinating her animals. It's also found a place in my medicine cabinet. We once used it to treat a puppy's severely inflamed eyelid. It was a terrible sight, but after just two days of use, the little one felt better. We administered subcutaneous injections for 10 days. The medication helped us avoid a complicated surgery."

Alexander, the bulldog's owner:

"Our dog contracted parvovirus enteritis as a puppy. After a walk outside, he suddenly became ill. He had severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea, and his howling continued almost all night. We went to the hospital in the morning. After an examination, he was given a double dose of Fosprenil. Symptomatic treatment was also prescribed. He only improved on the fifth day, but as it turns out, many puppies die from this disease. I believe Fosprenil saved our Bucks's life."

Veterinarian Reviews

Valentina Nikolaevna, a veterinarian with 15 years of experience:

"Fosprenil is an affordable and effective medication. Our clinic has long used it in combination with other medications for plague and other infectious diseases. I also recommend using it during vaccinations. It has been proven in practice to boost immunity after vaccination. It's an excellent product from a domestic manufacturer."

Nikolay, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"I'm wary of domestic medications, but Fosprenil is an exception. We've been using it at our clinic for a long time, so I can cite many successful cases. It was prescribed for infectious peritonitis in dogs living in a kennel. All the animals were cured, although effective treatment is difficult in crowded conditions. I believe this medication should be in every dog owner's first aid kit."
