Manufacturer's range

Fitmin pet food offers a wide selection. In total, the manufacturer offers 25 diets, grouped into three main lines.

Fitmin for different ages

This line includes three types of food, which differ not only in the content of individual ingredients, but also in the size of the dry granules, depending on the weight of adult animals:

  • Mini (weight up to 13 kg).
  • Medium (weight 13-35 kg).
  • Maxi (weighing from 35 kg).

Within each of these categories, you can select a diet tailored to your pet's age and specific needs. To do this, pay attention to the labels on the packaging: Puppy (for puppies, pregnant, and nursing dogs), Performance (high nutritional value for pets with increased energy needs), Maintenance (standard energy value), Light (reduced energy value), and Senior (for pets 7 years and older).

Compound

We'll analyze the composition of feed using Fitmin for Life Adult All Breeds as an example—a complete feed for adult animals of all breeds. First, we'll focus on the top five ingredients that can be used to assess the overall quality of the feed:

  1. Meat (fresh meat (chicken, pork, beef) – 20%, dried chicken meat 22%, hydrolyzed chicken liver 3%).
  2. Wheat.
  3. Wheat bran.
  4. Poultry fat.
  5. Wheat flour.

Further on the list are: rice, brewer's yeast, salmon oil (1%). The list of ingredients is rounded out by various additives: beet pulp, apple pulp, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, cellulose, chicory root (0.01%), and yucca (0.005%).

Squirrels

The first ingredient in the formula serves as a source of animal protein and is generally referred to as "meat." It combines three types of fresh meat, comprising a total of 30%, a fairly good percentage. However, the percentage of the total amount each type of meat accounts for and the specific animal parts used in the food's production remain unknown. Along with fresh meat, the manufacturer combined dried chicken meat with hydrolyzed chicken liver. The latter can be considered not only as a by-product and source of animal protein, but rather as a flavor-enhancing ingredient.

It can be assumed that the total protein content (25%) indicated in the guaranteed analysis is derived primarily from animal-based components, which is a definite plus for the diet. However, the food also contains plant proteins, which are quite abundant in wheat components.

Carbohydrates

The food's carbohydrate sources are two types of grain: wheat and rice. Of the top five components, wheat, or more precisely its derivatives: the grain itself, wheat bran, and wheat flour, ranks third. This results in what's known as a "split" component—a unique marketing ploy by the manufacturer that allows a large volume of grain to be separated into several components. Wheat itself and its flour provide not only carbohydrates but also vegetable protein, while the bran is also a source of fiber. Furthermore, wheat itself is an allergen and is undesirable as an ingredient in dog food.

Fats

Poultry fat is used as a fat source in the feed, ranking among the top five ingredients. It's not considered a high-quality ingredient, as the exact bird source is unknown. Additionally, 1% salmon oil is added, which is considered a higher-quality ingredient and serves as a source of essential fatty acids.

Supplements

The following additional components are used in Fitmin feed:

  • Brewer's yeast is a source of B vitamins.
  • Beet pulp and apple pomace provide the body with fiber, which is necessary for normalizing intestinal microflora, digestion processes, and the formation of animal stool.
  • Sodium dihydrogen phosphate – helps replenish sodium and phosphorus reserves, which ensure the maintenance of bone hardness, normal muscle contractility and restoration of water-salt balance.
  • Cellulose is not particularly beneficial for the body and is considered a cheap filler that, when swelled in the stomach, causes a feeling of satiety, so animals do not feel hungry for longer.
  • Chicory root is a source of the prebiotic inulin, which helps maintain healthy microflora in the dog's gastrointestinal tract.
  • Yucca - used to reduce fecal odor and has anti-inflammatory properties.

An analysis of the Fitmin dog food composition revealed both advantages and disadvantages. The formula contains a sufficient amount of animal protein sources (including 30% fresh meat), but the overall impression is somewhat marred by the combined name of the first ingredient. It would be clearer if the manufacturer listed all the meat ingredients separately and their exact contents. Other advantages include a balanced vitamin and mineral composition and a number of beneficial additives.

Among the shortcomings, there's a lack of information on the packaging about the preservatives used, as well as the use of significant amounts of allergenic grains, which should be taken into account if your pet has sensitive digestion. Furthermore, the high wheat content prevents Fitmin for Life Adult All Breeds from being considered a super-premium product.

Reviews

Kirill, Rottweiler owner:

"The vet recommended feeding both of our pets Fitmin, so we didn't hesitate to order a large package online. The dog eats happily, his coat is shiny, and he feels great. The only downside for me is that the food is only available in select stores, so I've recently been wanting to switch to a more widely available alternative."

Dina:

I spent a long time choosing the right food for my dachshund and settled on Fitmin, a Czech dry food. I'm quite happy with the ingredients, as is my pet's appearance and health, although I've had problems digesting other brands of food in the past. The only minor drawback is the food's rather strong odor, so I recommend storing it in a tightly sealed container.

Lyudmila, owner of two dogs:

"Fitmin's ingredients seem good at first glance, but it contains a lot of wheat-based ingredients (wheat itself, bran, and flour), which are potential allergens. Since one of my dogs is prone to allergies, I didn't risk feeding it to her. The other dog, however, ate it happily. There were no health issues either. I wouldn't criticize the food itself, but I think owners of pets with allergies should be careful with it. The manufacturer, however, should be commended for offering grain-free options."
