Febtal for dogs

Febtal is a complex anthelmintic medication used to treat and prevent helminthic infestations in dogs. Developed by a domestic manufacturer, Agrovetzashchita, the drug is considered safe for pets.

General description and features

The anthelmintic drug is available in two forms: tablets and Febtal Combo suspension. The medications differ not only in their form but also in their composition, although both versions offer broad antiparasitic action.

Pills

The round, flat tablets are gray. They have a score line on one side to allow the tablet to be divided into two equal halves, and the company logo is printed on the other side. They are packaged in blisters of six.

The active ingredient is fenbendazole. Each tablet contains 150 mg. This substance is what kills the worms. It works by disrupting energy metabolism. This occurs because fenbendazole destroys the microtubules in the worms' intestines. Because the parasites are unable to feed, they quickly die and are then excreted in the animal's feces.

Suspension

Febtal Combo is a white suspension. A grayish tint may occasionally be present. During prolonged storage, the suspension may separate. This is considered normal, as shaking results in a uniform consistency. The medication is packaged in polymer bottles with a capacity of 7 or 10 ml. The bottles are supplied with dosing syringes for convenient dosing of the anthelmintic.

The main difference between the suspension and the albendazole suspension is its composition. Unlike tablets, the active ingredients of Febtal Combo suspension are a combination of praziquantel and albendazole. The concentrations of these substances are low, but they effectively complement each other's actions. Praziquantel is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream upon entering the intestines, after which it is distributed throughout all tissues and organs. Albendazole is only partially absorbed, and its highest concentration remains in the intestines.

Price

The price of Febtal varies depending on the form of release:

  • 6 tablets will cost 105-130 rubles;
  • suspension, 10 ml – 90-125 rubles.

The medication is sold in many veterinary pharmacies. There are usually no shortages. You can also order it from online veterinary pharmacies. No prescription is required.

Basic properties

Febtal destroys parasites at all stages of development, from eggs to adulthood. Therefore, a single application is usually sufficient to completely eradicate helminths infesting pets. Febtal kills the following helminths:

  • pork tapeworm;
  • hookworms;
  • broad tapeworm;
  • canine toxocara;
  • roundworms;
  • cucumber tapeworm;
  • echinococci, etc.

After death, the parasites are eliminated from the animal's body without any additional measures. This eliminates the need for laxatives, but also eliminates the risk of poisoning. The only exception is cases of severe infestation, in which case symptomatic therapy may be necessary.

Parasites in animals

According to the accepted classification, Febtal is considered a moderately hazardous substance. It contains toxic components, but if recommended doses are not exceeded, the medication does not suppress the immune system or cause mutations in offspring. The drug is not addictive, so it can be used for ongoing prophylaxis.

When and how to apply

According to the instructions, Febtal is used for dogs to kill nematodes and cestodes. The medication is also effective against mixed infestations. It can also be used to prevent parasite infestations.

If the medication is used to kill worms, it is given once. Repeated doses are not required, as the components of the medication are effective against all parasites, regardless of their stage of development. To prevent helminth infestation, the medication is administered quarterly.

It is advisable to put tablets on the root of the tongueso that the dog cannot spit them out. If this is difficult, the tablets can be hidden in your pet's favorite treat. The dosage is calculated as 1 tablet per 1.5 kg of body weight.

Puppy on the scales

Please note! If this medication is used for puppies, one tablet is recommended per 3 kg of body weight. The medication is administered once daily for three days.

If using a suspension, the dosage is calculated simply: 1 ml per 1 kg. When administering Febtal Combo to puppies weighing less than 0.5 kg, add 0.3 ml of boiled cold water to the required amount of medication, then give the animal the mixture to drink. Shake the suspension well before use, as the ingredients may separate. The medication can be administered by forcibly squeezing it from the syringe into the mouth. It can also be mixed with food, such as canned food, ground meat, or other treats.

Regardless of whether you use the suspension or tablets, it's best to administer the medication in the morning. There's no need to follow a special diet before taking the anthelmintic.

Owner reviews

Lilia, owner of an East European Shepherd:

"We first used Febtal when our little girl was just five weeks old. On the second day, worms started coming out. On the third day, the worms continued to come out, but she also started vomiting. We went to the vet. It turned out Dolya had a severe helminth infestation and was becoming toxic. The medication works—and that's the main thing. I now use the tablets for regular prevention."

Victor, owner of a toy terrier:

"Our dog had a worm problem for a long time. The medications prescribed by the veterinarian either didn't work at all or were only temporary. After a week or two, worms would reappear in his stool. A breeder I know recommended Febtal Combo. After just one treatment, the worms were completely gone. He became more active and his appetite improved. We now use it regularly. There have been no side effects. One of the main advantages is the low price."

Pavel, the beagle's owner:

"There are a lot of negative reviews about Febtal on forums, but I personally have had a positive experience with it. We used it on our dog while we were at our dacha this summer. We used it as a preventative measure. Upon returning to the city, we had him tested and found no worms. The medication went well. However, we couldn't disguise the tablets in his food; we had to force them into his mouth. The procedure itself was unpleasant, but there were no side effects."

Veterinarian Reviews

Marina, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"Febtal is an excellent anthelmintic drug. Compared to pyrantel-based medications, it's more effective. It's less expensive than foreign-based options, yet it's effective at killing worms. The medication is considered safe. The only side effect is foaming at the mouth due to the bitter taste, and even that's more common in cats than dogs."

Kostya, a veterinarian with 8 years of experience:

"Febtal Combo is one of the few medications that can be used for puppies. Animals generally tolerate deworming well, although to be honest, there have been cases of severe diarrhea and vomiting. But this is the exception. Overall, I'm satisfied with the drug's effectiveness and recommend it to owners of puppies and small animals. For larger animals, it's best to choose a stronger anthelmintic."
