Eurikan for dogs

Eurikan is a vaccine for dogs used to prevent distemper, adenovirus infections, and other dangerous infectious diseases. It was developed by the French manufacturer Merial, a well-known company in the veterinary market.

General description

The vaccine comes in two different modifications:

  • Eurican DHPPI2-L;
  • Eurican DHPPI2-LR.

The difference is that Eurican DHPPI2-LR contains rabies virus strains. The dosage regimen differs due to the composition, but otherwise they are similar (same storage conditions, appearance, and methods of use) and have no other differences.

Eurikan for dogs

Eurikan consists of two components:

  1. The dry component is a light yellow or beige, externally porous mass. It contains strains of parvovirus, adenovirus, distemper, and parainfluenza type 2 viruses, prepared and dried using a special method. The dry component also contains polypeptides and glucides, which act as stabilizers.
  2. The liquid component is a slightly turbid liquid. Upon prolonged storage, it becomes clear, with a sediment settling at the bottom that mixes well when shaken. The suspension contains leptospira strains, and in the DHPPI2-LR variant, also rabies viruses.

The dry and liquid components are packaged separately in clear glass vials. Rubber stoppers, sealed with aluminum caps, ensure a hermetic seal. Each vial contains 1 ml, which is equivalent to the immunization dose. One dose consists of two vials containing the dry and liquid components, which are mixed before use. vaccination.

Price

The price of Eurikan depends on the type of vaccine:

  • the cost of one dose of Eurican DHPPI2-LR (2 vials) is from 400 to 480 rubles;
  • The cost of one dose of Eurican DHPPI2-L is from 340 to 360 rubles.

Although the product can be ordered online, it is best to purchase it at a clinic or local veterinary pharmacy, as the vaccine must be stored and transported at low temperatures.

Operating principle and purpose

According to the instructions, Eurikan for dogs is used for prophylactic purposes, namely, to develop immunity against a number of dangerous infectious diseases:

  • plague;
  • parainfluenza-2;
  • pathologies caused by adenovirus infections;
  • infectious hepatitis;
  • parvovirus;
  • leptospirosis;
  • rabies (only in the version marked LR).

Eurikan for dogs

Eurikan contains weakened and specially prepared virus strains. When administered to an animal, they are harmless, but only if all vaccination guidelines are followed and the procedure is properly prepared. The viruses stimulate the immune system's response and provide protection against infectious diseases for 12 months. After this time, immunity weakens, requiring booster vaccinations.

Please note! The Eurikan vaccine is for prophylactic use only. It is not intended for therapeutic purposes. It cannot be used on infected animals.

How is it applied?

The use of the vaccine requires adherence to a specific algorithm of actions:

  1. Shake the liquid portion in the bottle until it forms a homogeneous suspension. This is especially important if sediment is visible at the bottom.
  2. Next, you need to pierce the rubber stopper with a syringe and needle and draw the liquid component into it.
  3. Transfer the suspension into the bottle with the dry component without opening the stopper, but simply piercing it.
  4. Shake well to ensure that the porous dry mass is completely dissolved in the liquid.
  5. Draw the prepared mixture into the syringe.
  6. Make a subcutaneous injection, after wiping the injection site with ethyl alcohol.

Sterile syringes and needles, preferably disposable, are used for the procedure. If reusable syringes or needles are used, they must be sterilized by boiling for 20 minutes. A new sterile kit is used for each pet if multiple animals are being vaccinated simultaneously.

Vaccination of a puppy

Important! A single dose is 1 ml. It does not depend on the dog's breed or weight. It remains the same for puppies and adult dogs.

Application scheme

To ensure Eurikan develops effective immunity in dogs, the following vaccination schedule must be followed:

  1. Puppies are subject to vaccination from 7 weeks of age, but only Eurican DHPPI2-L (without rabies) is used.
  2. The first immunization is administered twice. The second injection is given 3-5 weeks after the first.
  3. The second injection is administered with the first vaccine or Eurican DHPPI2-LR (with rabies). The rabies vaccine can only be administered starting at 12 weeks of age. If the first option is chosen, the rabies vaccine is administered separately, not in combination with Eurican.
  4. Revaccination is performed annually for all adult dogs.

It's advisable not to skip scheduled immunizations, as this can lead to decreased protection. If you miss one, get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Vaccination schedule

Deworming is essential 10 days before immunization, even if worms are not detected. This is because parasite waste products can cause intoxication. Therefore, the immune system is "busy" removing the toxin from the body rather than generating a protective response to viruses.

Storage rules

According to the instructions for use, Eurikan for dogs is considered a harmless vaccine, but to preserve its biological properties and safety, it is necessary to observe the following storage conditions:

  1. Storage temperatures must be kept strictly between 2 and 8˚C, so the vaccine is usually placed in the refrigerator on a separate shelf to prevent it from coming into contact with food.
  2. Avoid contact with direct sunlight.
  3. Once opened, the vaccine can be used within half an hour. If the vaccine has not been used within this time, it should be discarded, but first disinfected by boiling for 30 minutes.
  4. Freezing is strictly prohibited.

To avoid harming the animal, you should stop using Eurikan in the following cases:

  • the liquid component was frozen;
  • foreign impurities appeared in the bottle;
  • the packaging is not sealed;
  • the vaccine was stored incorrectly;
  • There is no marking on the bottle and its origin is unknown;
  • the expiration date has expired.

It's important to follow storage instructions when transporting the product. Otherwise, it may cause complications.

Contraindications and side effects

Although Eurikan is considered safe, it has contraindications. Vaccinations should not be administered to:

  • weakened and exhausted animals with weak immunity;
  • pets during illness (acute or exacerbation of chronic illness);
  • puppies up to 7 weeks of age (Eurican DHPPI2-LR should not be used before they reach 3 months of age);
  • dogs that have been found to have internal or external parasites;
  • pregnant bitches after the first trimester.

Vaccinations are only recommended for healthy pets. It's recommended to visit a veterinarian beforehand to have the animal examined and checked for any hidden illnesses.

Healthy dog

The instructions state that Eurikan does not cause symptoms of distemper, parvovirus, infectious hepatitis, or other infectious diseases in dogs. The drug is generally well-tolerated by animals and does not cause side effects. Occasionally, a lump may develop at the injection site, which resolves on its own within 2-3 days. An anaphylactic reaction rarely occurs. In this case, symptomatic treatment is necessary.

Occasionally, a dog may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • drowsiness;
  • vomit;
  • diarrhea;
  • lack of appetite, etc.

Symptoms may be caused by an early-stage infection that was not present before vaccination. If your dog's condition does not improve within a day, consult a veterinarian.

Owner reviews

Oksana, owner of a French bulldog:

"We used to always use Nobivac for immunizations, but one day it was out of stock. The pharmacist recommended Eurikan. This vaccine didn't work for us. After the injection, the dog slept for almost a day. Her nose was hot and dry, and she refused to eat. We went to the clinic and they barely managed to get her through the nose. I won't be using this product again."

Vladimir, the spaniel's owner:

"I've used Eurikan to vaccinate my dog several times. My spaniel tolerates it well. There are no side effects. It provides good protection against dangerous viral infections; at least we avoided parainfluenza during the epidemic in the city. The main thing is to follow all the veterinarian's recommendations and properly prepare your pet for the procedure."

Veterinarian Reviews

Evgeny, a veterinarian with 6 years of experience:

"I consider Eurikan to be one of the best vaccines on the market. I've been using it in my practice for a long time, and all my animals tolerate it well. I've never experienced drowsiness, apathy, or fever. I recently vaccinated my two Yorkies. There were no negative effects. After the shot, my pets remained as cheerful and active as before."

Galina, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:

"Eurikan is an excellent vaccine. I've been using it in my practice for about five years. During this time, I've never observed any side effects such as drowsiness, anaphylactic shock, apathy, or fever, but there have been three cases of enteritis after vaccination. One of the puppies nearly died. But this was more a matter of improper transportation than the vaccine itself."
