Do cats have nipples?
Owners usually don't care whether their cat has nipples. They most often ask this question when they suddenly feel a lump in the abdomen and are trying to determine its nature.
Sometimes people try to determine a cat's sex by the presence of nipples, believing that these structures are found exclusively on a cat's body. Kitten feeding is a process many cat owners have witnessed at home, and it's primarily associated with female cats.
In order to understand whether cats have nipples or not, it is necessary to touch upon the anatomical structure of this animal's body.

Are nipples normal on a cat?
The presence of nipples in cats is a self-evident fact. But in reality, these organs are not sex-linked, as their rudiments are laid down during fetal development, before sexual differences emerge.
In male cats, nipples are rarely detected because they are still in their rudimentary stage, just like in males. While female cats experience peak mammary gland development at the end of pregnancy and throughout lactation, males do not experience this stage. This is because female cats produce the female hormones responsible for mammary gland development, while males do not. The rudimentary state of the nipples results in a pinkish coloration and extremely small size.
Nipple positioning
These organs are located on the ventral surface of the skin. In furred breeds, they are often densely covered by the fur and are difficult to notice, but sometimes there is slight thinning around them. Anyone without a specialist can feel them.
The nipples are located in pairs on the right and left sides. In rare cases, symmetry is impaired, which does not affect the overall health of cats. Blood supply and lymph drainage occur in vertical rows, not in pairs, so systemic mammary gland pathologies in the early stages most often affect only the right or left side, eventually spreading to the other side. Below is a photo of what a cat's nipples look like.

Quantity
It sounds surprising to people, but the number of nipples in male and female cats The number can vary greatly. A normal number is considered to be between 4 and 8, but deviations from this number are not in any way dangerous. An insufficient number indicates that some nipples have stopped developing in the womb; a healthy cat should definitely have at least 4.
Veterinarians define the following pairs of nipple positions:
- pectoral (closest to the front legs);
- abdominal (there may be the most of them);
- inguinal (felt in the depressions near the hind legs).
The following is also considered normal:
- location in the middle of the abdomen;
- asymmetry of pairs;
- odd number of nipples;
- different sizes of these organs in one animal.
The number of nipples does not depend on the breed, and it does not change with age.

Enlarged nipples in a cat
If these organs, or one of them, suddenly become large, swollen, and painful, the cat needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. This symptom, in most cases, indicates illnesses that the animal's body is unable to overcome on its own.
Most often, the reasons for such changes are:
- disruptions in the functioning of the lymphatic system;
- consequences of taking certain medications;
- hormonal imbalances (often after castration of a cat);
- allergic reaction to a new type of food;
- benign neoplasms (hyperplasia);
- malignant tumors.
After the examination, the veterinarian will determine what tests the cat needs and what diagnostic measures need to be taken to confirm the suspected diagnosis.
