Enrosept for cats

Enrosept is an effective broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial inflammation and purulent wounds in cats. It is manufactured by the Russian company Vetbiokhim, which not only manufactures medications for animals but also conducts innovative research in the field of pharmacology, feed, and nutritional supplements.

Dosage form and composition

Enrosept is available as an injection solution. It is available as a 5% or 10% solution, depending on the concentration of enrofloxacin, the active ingredient in the medication (5 and 10 mg per 100 ml of solution, respectively). The antibiotic also contains the following auxiliary substances:

  • potassium hydroxide;
  • n-butanol;
  • purified water.

The clear solution is slightly yellowish or colorless. It is packaged in clear glass vials, which are sealed with rubber stoppers and sealed with aluminum caps. This packaging method maintains a hermetic seal and prevents spoilage. Small vials are packaged 10 at a time in cardboard boxes, but pharmacies typically sell them individually. Store the medication at temperatures between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius, away from sunlight.

Please note! The instructions for use do not specify whether the medication can be stored after opening. Cat owners should check with their veterinarian for this information.

Pharmacological properties

Enrosept belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics. Its key feature is its effectiveness against pathogenic microorganisms resistant to macrolides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, aminoglycosides, and sulfonamides. The active ingredient in the drug exhibits pronounced antimicrobial activity against various types of pathogenic bacteria. It can destroy:

  • staphylococci;
  • streptococci;
  • clostridia;
  • mycoplasma;
  • corynebacteria;
  • salmonella;
  • Bordetella, etc.

The drug works by inhibiting the enzyme DNA gyrase, a special substance that plays a vital role in bacterial regeneration. Disruption of normal life processes leads to the rapid death of pathogenic microorganisms.

Within a short period of time, the medication penetrates the bloodstream from the injection site, reaching all organs and tissues. The drug maintains its antibacterial properties for 24 hours. After metabolism in the liver, the active substance is eliminated from the body primarily through urine and bile.

When to use

Enrosept for cats is used to treat the following pathologies:

  • with mycoplasmosis;
  • for salmonellosis;
  • in case of pneumonia;
  • with colibacillosis;
  • with camplibacteriosis;
  • for staphylococcosis, etc.

Infection in a cat

The drug can be used to treat genitourinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms. The antibiotic can also be used for purulent wounds of varying degrees of severity.

Please note! Although Enrosept is considered a low-risk medication, it should not be used without consulting a doctor. Treatment should only be started after testing, a full examination, and a diagnosis. Do not self-medicate cats with this medication.

Instructions for use

Cats should receive antibacterial injections subcutaneously. For small animals, including cats, a 5% solution is recommended. The 10% solution is more concentrated, making it difficult to accurately calculate the dosage. It is more suitable for pigs and cattle.

According to the instructions for use, the Enrosept 5% dosage for cats is calculated based on weight. 1 ml of the drug is calculated per 10 kg of body weight. If for some reason a 10% solution must be used, the dosage is calculated based on 0.5 ml of the drug per 10 kg of body weight. The medication can be diluted with saline. Injections should be administered once daily. The duration of treatment ranges from 5 to 10 days, depending on the overall health, symptoms, and underlying pathology. The duration of treatment is determined by a veterinarian after examining the animal.

Water for injection

Please note! Enrosept injections are painful, so they should be administered in different locations. It is recommended to administer the medication slowly to reduce the pain.

It is not recommended to miss an injection, as this reduces the effectiveness of the medication. If an injection is missed on time, it should be corrected as soon as possible. Do not increase the dose. Subsequently, the antibiotic should be administered according to the previously prescribed schedule.

Contraindications and side effects

Enrosept should not be used for cats in the following cases:

  • in case of intolerance to the components;
  • in severe kidney diseases;
  • in case of liver failure and other liver pathologies.

Antibiotics should also not be used during lactation, as the active ingredient can penetrate milk. In young kittens, the antibacterial agent may trigger dysbiosis or cause other side effects.

Please note! For kittens under 1 year of age and pregnant females, this medication should only be used after consulting a veterinarian. The veterinarian must assess the potential risks.

Enrosept should not be combined with other antibacterial agents, theophylline, or steroids. This increases the risk of an allergic reaction.

Felines generally tolerate the antibiotic well and do not experience any side effects. Occasionally, soreness at the injection site may occur, but this resolves on its own and does not require special treatment. In case of intolerance to any of the components, an allergic reaction may occur. In this case, the pet should be given an antiallergic medication and further use of the antibiotic should be discontinued.

In case of overdose, the following side effects may occur:

  • depressed state;
  • apathy;
  • refusal to eat;
  • bluish discoloration of the mucous membranes;
  • diarrhea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Please note! The drug may cause an allergic reaction in people with hypersensitivity, so avoid direct contact with the solution and wash your hands thoroughly with soap after the injection.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of Enrosept include the following:

  • Highly effective. Treatment results are noticeable after just 1-2 injections.
  • Broad spectrum of action. The drug is effective even against bacteria resistant to other antibiotics.
  • Administration method. Subcutaneous injections, unlike intramuscular injections, are something most cat owners are comfortable administering.
  • Availability. Finding this medication in pharmacies is easy. It's available even in small towns. Ordering it online is also easy.

Price

Moreover, the price of Enrosept is lower than that of imported analogues, for example, Baytril, below. A 10 ml bottle costs about 50 rubles, and a larger 100 ml bottle will cost 220-270 rubles, depending on the pharmacy and region.

The medication's drawbacks include its contraindications. It's difficult to call the drug completely safe. If the dosage is calculated incorrectly, the antibacterial agent can cause serious side effects.

Owner reviews

Oksana, owner of a Scottish cat:

"Enrosept was prescribed to my cat for a digestive disorder accompanied by inflammation and gastritis. We administered the medication intramuscularly. There were no side effects. Combined with other medications, the antibiotic helped us. The treatment's progress was noticeable both in the cat's behavior and in the tests we took after completing the course."

Victoria, owner of a 6-month-old kitten:

"We were prescribed Enrosept to treat pneumonia. I read on a veterinary website that the medication shouldn't be used on cats under one year old, but I decided to trust my vet. Just five injections later, and there was no sign of the illness. Despite all my concerns, the kitty tolerated the injections well. There was no diarrhea or other side effects."

Veterinarian Reviews

Vladimir, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"Enrofloxacin-based medications are highly effective, so I often use them in my practice. I usually prefer Baytril, and in extreme cases, I use Enrosept or other domestic equivalents. Although the Russian antibiotic is cheaper (it works the same way), I still trust imported medications more, but that's just my personal belief."

Valentina, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:

"Enrosept is a powerful and effective antibiotic. I've been using it for a long time to treat cats and dogs, cows, and pigs. It's always readily available in our village. Over many years of use, I've never had a single case of side effects, excluding an overdose (owners confused the 5% and 10% solutions). However, I rarely prescribe it to kittens, only in cases where the kitten is in real danger of illness and the risk of death."
