Express shedding for dogs and cats
Shedding is the process of changing an animal's coat. Reptiles shed their skin periodically, insects can replace entire body parts, and mammals shed their fur partially: dead downy and guard hairs fall out, and new ones grow in their place. Seasonal shedding in dogs and cats typically occurs in the spring and fall. During this period, pets leave clumps of shed hair all over the house, forcing owners to either spend hours daily brushing their dog or cat, or, in desperation, shave their pet's hair completely.

Express deshedding has recently gained popularity. It removes as much hair and undercoat as possible in a single session. Express deshedding also massages the skin and stimulates new hair growth. This procedure is most often performed in grooming salons, but it can also be done at home.

How express shedding is performed at a grooming salon
All grooming procedures at salons are performed only on animals vaccinated against rabies. The price of express deshedding at Moscow grooming salons depends on the groomer's time, which generally depends on the animal's weight and coat condition. For cats, express deshedding costs between 2,100 and 2,800 rubles. Express deshedding for dogs ranges from 1,600 rubles (for animals weighing up to 5 kg) to 4,000 rubles (for animals weighing over 35 kg).

The express molting procedure includes:
- combing the animal with a slicker brush to remove any hair that has already fallen out;
- application of a mask that has a nourishing and warming effect;
- spa treatment – the animal is wrapped in waterproof film to create a sauna effect and facilitate the removal of old hair follicles;
- washing with a professional shampoo suitable for the type of coat of a cat or dog;
- drying the wool with a compressor, which blows the dead wool away from the skin;
- A thorough final combing with special combs, brushes, and slickers, which are selected depending on the length and type of the pet's coat.

The grooming complex also usually includes standard hygiene procedures - trimming claws, cleaning ears and eyes.
Express shedding at home
To carry out the quick molting procedure at home you will need:
- Furminator – a tool for removing wool, a blade with frequent short teeth;
- a slicker brush is a specially designed comb with bristles that are positioned at an angle, and when you press on the comb, its teeth bend without damaging the skin;
- soft bristle brush;
- a comb with sparse teeth rounded at the edges;
- polyethylene film;
- grooming shampoo for animals;
- warming cream mask;
- hair dryer booster or compressor.

Express deshedding at home follows the same procedure as in a salon, and is best done in the bathroom. If your pet isn't accustomed to grooming procedures from infancy, try to prepare them in advance. Show them and let them sniff the tools you'll be using, demonstrate by brushing their fur a couple of times and blowing a hairdryer on their back that this isn't scary at all, but rather enjoyable.
When brushing with a slicker brush, pay special attention to the belly and the "pants" area. When removing dead hair with a furminator, move from head to tail, in the direction of hair growth. To soften the skin and facilitate the shedding of dead hair follicles, apply the mask for no more than half an hour, then rinse with warm water and shampoo.

Breeds that require express shedding
Not all dog and cat breeds shed at the same rate. For example, the Yorkshire Terrier's seasonal coat change is almost unnoticeable. terrier, Bedlington Terrier, American Hairless Terrier, Xoloitzcuintle, Chinese CrestedBulldogs, Chihuahuas, and dachshunds shed moderately. However, Labradors, Huskies, Akitas, Samoyeds, St. Bernards, Collies, and Pugs shed very heavily, so they require professional express deshedding treatments more than other breeds.

Among cat breeds, the Sphynx, Siamese, Thai, Abyssinian, Balinese, Burmese, and Devon Rex are considered non-shedding breeds; they do not require express shedding. Kurilian Bobtails, Angoras, and Burmese are moderate shedders. Heavy shedding breeds include the Scottish Fold, Persian, Maine Coon, and American Curl; these breeds are often seen in grooming salons.

According to pet owner reviews, the effects of a well-done express deshedding treatment for even the longest-haired dogs with thick undercoats typically last 2-3 months. But even if your pet doesn't shed heavily, it's recommended to perform this treatment at least twice a year, focusing on their natural shedding periods.
