The breed is believed to have originated in the 1820s, and its creator was a priest named John Russell, nicknamed Jack. Russell lived in the English county of Devonshire. The priest was a keen hunter and was also considered a skilled dog breeder. It was for hunting badgers, raccoons, and foxes that he created the dog breed now known as the Jack Russell Terrier.
The purpose of this dog was to retrieve prey from burrows, which it did quite well. The modern Jack Russell Terrier has retained its hunting instincts, but is rarely used for this purpose; it is more often kept as a companion.
Interestingly, this breed was very popular in England for a long time, but was only officially registered in 1990. Today, it is considered one of the most popular worldwide. Jack Russell Terriers are also adept at hunting smaller rodents. Interestingly, in 1977, a British dog named Vampire single-handedly killed a ton of rats.

Jack Russell Terriers are small dogs, standing approximately 30 cm at the withers and weighing between 6-8 kg. They are a fairly strong and agile dog with strong bones and well-developed muscles.
The skull between the ears should always be a stripe. The stop is well defined. The muzzle is elongated, the length from the tip of the nose to the stop should be slightly shorter than from the stop to the occiput. The lips are tight, the jaws are strong and wide, and the teeth are correctly aligned. The eyes are small. The nose, eyes, lips, and eyelids are well pigmented. The body is slightly elongated. This procedure is quite labor-intensive and requires specific skills, so it's often left to a professional. Water treatments are recommended as needed, approximately once a month. Most of the Jack Russer Terrier's coat is white, but it always stays clean due to its self-cleaning properties.
It's also recommended to pay attention to dental health, especially if your dog eats natural food. Provide them with special cleaning bones. Use a special toothpaste and toothbrush at least twice a week. The ear canal should be cleaned several times a month. This can be done using special hygienic wipes and cotton swabs.
Nutrition
Terriers are generally not picky eaters, rarely have digestive issues, and are not prone to allergies. Therefore, there are no special feeding recommendations for them. The only thing worth noting is their tendency to gain weight. Feeding is recommended a couple of hours before a walk or 30 minutes after. It's also advisable to develop and maintain a feeding schedule.
If natural food is preferred, approximately 50% of the dog's diet should be meat products, such as beef, veal, or poultry. Fatty pork and lamb should be avoided. Chicken and by-products should only be boiled. A raw egg can be given to Jack a couple of times a week. Cottage cheese is good for replenishing calcium reserves. As for cereals, buckwheat and semi-liquid rice porridge are ideal. Vegetables and greens should be added to the diet.
Jack Russell Terriers can be fed high-quality commercial dry food. Many manufacturers offer entire lines of diets, from which you can choose the most suitable one. Jack Russell Terriers require food for adult small breeds with an active lifestyle, high in animal protein. Until one year old, only puppy food can be used. Once they reach adulthood, you can switch to a senior dog food.
Health and life expectancy
Representatives of the breed are known for their good health and good genetics. However, they are susceptible to a few health conditions:
