Dosalid for dogs
Dosalid is an effective anthelmintic medication for dogs. Developed by an American company, this medication is based on two active ingredients. It can be used to treat and prevent virtually all types of roundworms and tapeworms.
Content
Composition and release form
This broad-spectrum anthelmintic comes in oval tablets. A deep groove down the center makes them easy to divide if needed. A unique feature of this medication is that it is available in two versions:
- 300 mg tablets are designed for puppies and small breeds (up to 13-14 kg);
- 1200 mg tablets are intended for medium and large breeds.

They differ in the concentration of active ingredients, but can be distinguished visually by their color: Dosalid 300 is brown, while Dosalid 1200 is orange. The tablets are packaged in blisters of two. A cardboard box may contain one or more blisters.
High efficacy is achieved through two active ingredients: pyrantel pamoate and epsiprantel. The following are used as excipients:
- microcrystalline cellulose;
- lactose monohydrate;
- cornstarch;
- sodium lauryl sulfate, etc.
How does it work?
This antiparasitic medication effectively kills and prevents various types of nematodes and cestodes. Its broad spectrum of action is due to the combination of two components:
- Pyrantel, which belongs to the pyrimidine group, disrupts nerve impulse transmission. Its effects also extend to muscle function, ultimately leading to paralysis and death, but it is only effective against roundworms.
- Epsiprantelum disrupts the glucose consumption mechanism and other important metabolic processes in cestodes, which also ultimately leads to the death of the parasites.
The drug's components are insoluble, which ensures its long-lasting action. They are eliminated from the body primarily through feces.

Important! Dosalid is classified as a moderately hazardous substance; exceeding the recommended dose may cause side effects.
When and how is it applied?
According to the instructions, Dosalid is used for dogs to kill tapeworms and roundworms. These parasites pose a serious threat to animals, so treatment should not be delayed. The medication is also used to prevent the development of worms, which dogs can become infected with in various ways.
Dosalid dosage is calculated based on the animal's weight. 300 mg tablets are given to dogs in the following amounts:
- For puppies weighing 1-2 kg, half is enough.
- For puppies and dogs weighing 3-4 kg, you will need one piece.
- For pets weighing 5-6 kg, 1.5 tablets are needed.
- If the pet's weight is 7-9 kg, 2 jokes are required.
- For animals weighing between 10 and 13 kg, take 3 tablets.

The dosage of Dosalid 1200 tablets based on weight is as follows:
- for 14-18 kg - 1 piece;
- for 19-27 kg – 1.5 pcs.;
- for 28-36 kg – 2 pcs.;
- for 37-54 kg – 3 pcs.;
- more than 55 kg – 4 pcs.
Since the medication contains insoluble components, it cannot be diluted in water. The medication can be administered in two ways:
- Mix with wet food, such as ground meat or canned food, and feed to your pet. For puppies, you can crush the tablet before mixing it with food.
- Force the pill. Place it on the back of the tongue, tilt the head upward, and stroke the neck to encourage swallowing. A special device can make this process easier. It can be purchased at a pharmacy.
If the medication is used for therapeutic purposes, it is administered twice at the prescribed doses. The interval between doses is 7-14 days. The exact interval is determined by the doctor. For the treatment of T. cardas infestations in puppies, Dosalid is administered twice, 2-3 days apart.

When using the medication for preventive deworming, the following recommendations must be followed:
- The first dose of Dosalid for prophylactic purposes is administered between 2 and 4 weeks of age. Smaller tablets are used.
- Until puppies reach six months of age, they are given an anthelmintic (Dosalid 300) monthly.
- Nursing females should be given the medication 14 days after giving birth. It should be administered regularly throughout the lactation period. The interval between doses should be two weeks. The medication is administered to females and puppies simultaneously.
- Deworming of adult pets with Dosalid is carried out once every six months.
It is not recommended to skip doses of the medication, as this may result in decreased effectiveness.
Contraindications and side effects
The use of Dosalid should be avoided in the following cases:
- up to 2 weeks of age;
- if the weight is less than 1 kg;
- in case of individual intolerance to the components.
Overdose may cause vomiting and diarrhea. There is no specific remedy to neutralize the drug's effects, so in such cases, general measures to remove the active components from the body are taken. If symptoms of an overdose are detected, consult a veterinarian. They will prescribe medications for symptomatic treatment and provide recommendations regarding your pet's diet and drinking regimen. When taken at the recommended dose, the medication is generally well tolerated by animals and does not cause adverse reactions.

In case of intolerance to any of the components, allergic reactions may occur, manifested by rash, redness, itching, and other symptoms. In this case, discontinue the medication. The dog should be given antihistamines and treated symptomatically.
Please note: Since Dosalid has contraindications and may cause side effects, consult a veterinarian before use.

Owner reviews
Valentina, the owner of the Great Dane:
"We were constantly using Milbemax for deworming, but during the next preventative treatment, the liver function tests were poor, and any anthelmintic is poisonous. The vet recommended Dosalid. It's an excellent and safe medication that had no negative effects on the liver. The results didn't worsen after use. They say the medication is excellent for sick and weakened animals, and I know it can even be given to puppies."
Oksana, owner of a Golden Retriever puppy:
"When we brought our little one home, the breeder recommended this anthelmintic, saying it works great and is safe for animals. We dewormed him, and he tolerated it well, with no side effects or allergies. When he gets older, we'll switch to a different form of the medication."
Veterinarian Reviews
Inna, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:
"Dosalid is an effective antihelminthic medication. Its main advantage is that it is virtually not absorbed in the intestines, so it doesn't affect the liver, yet it remains effective for a long time. The only drawback, I think, is that it can be difficult to find in pharmacies, especially in small towns."
Vadim, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:
"An excellent dewormer. Judging by my clients' reviews, it's well-tolerated and almost never causes side effects. One of the few medications that can be given to female dogs during pregnancy and lactation, although precautions should still be taken."
