General description
Diarkan is available in the form of pink or light brown sugar cubes. A groove runs down the center of the cube, allowing it to be divided into two equal parts. This is especially convenient when administering the medication to puppies and small breeds. The cubes are packaged in plastic blisters.

From the date of manufacture, the medicine can be stored for 5 years, provided the packaging is sealed and the storage location is away from sunlight. The air temperature should be between 0 and 25°C.
Please note! Sugar cubes have a sweet taste, so store them in a location out of reach of children. This will prevent them from ingesting this dangerous sweet.
Composition and action
This antibacterial agent is highly effective because it contains three active ingredients, each with its own specific action. They complement each other in the animal's body and allow for rapid elimination of the pathology caused by intestinal infection.
The complex action of Diarcan is due to the following active ingredients:
- Sulfaguanidine. The substance has a pronounced antibacterial effect. It is particularly effective against E. coli and Salmonella, and also affects Shigella, Escherichia coli, and other pathogens that can cause digestive problems. A unique feature of this component is that it is virtually not absorbed from the digestive system. The substance concentrates in the intestines, making it effective regardless of the stage of the disease.
- Benzonaphthol. It breaks down in the intestines into two substances: benzoic acid and a-naphthol. Each of these substances has an antiseptic effect, thereby preventing the spread of infection in the body.
- Ratanhia plant extract. When the medicinal plant extract enters the intestines, it coats their walls, creating a barrier that prevents the absorption of toxic substances.

This comprehensive approach not only eliminates the cause of the disease but also reduces its symptoms. Within a relatively short period of time, the sick pet's well-being improves.
Price
The price of a package of Diarcan (8 cubes) ranges from 440 to 560 rubles in online pharmacies. The price may be higher in regular veterinary pharmacies. Some pharmacies sell the cubes individually (60-80 rubles), which is very convenient for small dog owners. A doctor's prescription is not required.
When and how to use
According to the instructions for use, Diarkan is used in dogs for intestinal diseases caused by bacteria that are sensitive to the drug's components. In practice, the drug is often prescribed if the animal is vomiting, has severe diarrhea and other signs of intestinal infection. Although the medication is considered safe, it should not be used on pets without a veterinarian's prescription.
Most dogs will eat sugar cubes straight from their owner's hand due to their sweet taste. If your pet is picky and refuses to eat the cube voluntarily, you can crush the cube and mix it with their food. Use only a small amount of ground meat, canned food, or other food to ensure the pet consumes the entire dose of the medication. Incorrect dosing may reduce the effectiveness of the antibacterial agent.
If the dog refuses any food, dissolve the sugar block in a small amount of water and then administer it to the dog using a syringe without a needle. This method of administering the antibiotic is often used for young puppies.

Please note! During treatment with antibacterial medication, your pet must have constant access to clean water. Otherwise, the risk of kidney or bladder stones increases.
Dosage and administration
The dosage of Diarcan for dogs is calculated based on their weight:
- puppies and small dogs (up to 5 kg) you will need half a briquette;
- for animals weighing from 5 to 15 kg, a single dose is 1 cube;
- for representatives medium breeds (from 15 to 30 kg) you need to take 1.5 briquettes;
- Large pets (over 30 kg) should be given 2 cubes at a time.
The medication is typically administered morning and evening (12 hours apart), but if symptoms are acute, the number of doses is increased to three. The interval between doses should be eight hours. It is not recommended to follow the doctor's prescribed treatment regimen or skip doses, as this will negatively impact its effectiveness.

Treatment usually lasts 3-5 days. The duration of treatment should be determined by a doctor, taking into account the pet's condition and the specific course of the disease. Sometimes the antibiotic is combined with symptomatic therapy, but only a doctor should prescribe these medications, as Diarkan is incompatible with some medications.
Contraindications and restrictions
Although Diarkan is classified as a low-hazard substance, the instructions list a number of contraindications. The antibacterial agent should not be used if you have the following health conditions:
- in liver pathologies;
- in case of kidney dysfunction;
- in case of intolerance to the components;
- for urolithiasis.
The drug is also contraindicated for use by pregnant or nursing female dogs. The medication may adversely affect the development of puppies, so it should not be administered during the nursing period. It is not recommended for use by puppies weighing less than 1 kg.

Diarkan should not be used concurrently with medications that increase urine acidity, such as ascorbic acid. This increases the risk of developing crystallurgy—the formation of kidney stonesWhen used in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, blood thinners, and sulfonylurea derivatives, antibiotics may cause side effects due to increased toxicity.
Please note: To avoid potential adverse reactions, consult your veterinarian before using this product.
Side effects
Intolerance to the components of Diarcan in dogs may manifest itself with the following symptoms:
- hives;
- itching;
- vomiting and nausea;
- allergic dermatitis and others.
If an allergy occurs, your pet is given an antiallergic medication to stop the body's adverse reaction. Symptomatic therapy may also be used depending on the specific nature of the reaction.

An overdose can cause digestive problems, including vomiting, nausea, and severe diarrhea. The pet's overall condition also worsens. To counteract the toxic effects of the drug, the dog's stomach is flushed and enterosorbents are administered. Additional medications are prescribed to manage any symptoms.
Owner reviews
Victor, the owner of the Alabai:
"Our dog's first trip to the dacha was a roller coaster of excitement. He was so eager, like a little child, to try everything. He spent most of his time digging or chewing on things, and after a couple of days, he developed severe diarrhea. Leopard "He stopped running around the yard, so we went to the hospital. They diagnosed salmonella and prescribed Diarkan. Bars tried it, but he refused to eat the cubes, so we had to mix them with his food. The results of the treatment were visible on the second day."
Galina, owner of a 5-year-old dog:
"The dog became severely distressed, literally leaking fluid. Our clinic is closed on weekends, so we had to figure out how to help the animal ourselves. We remembered Diarkan (previously used to treat E. coli in cats) and gave him a cube. By the morning, the dog was significantly better, and by Sunday his condition had completely returned to normal, so we didn't even have to go to the vet."
