Cat Day in Russia

Fluffy pets—cats—have finally earned their own holiday. Cat Day, or more accurately, Cat Day, is a worldwide celebration honoring these meowing beauties.

Each country celebrates this holiday in its own way, and in some countries, it's even celebrated on different dates. Of course, it's an unofficial holiday, meaning it's not recognized by the UN, UNESCO, or other international organizations. But the most important thing for any holiday is to find approval and support in the hearts of ordinary citizens, right? And that's something cat lovers certainly have.

Cat Day in Russia

Felinologists began counting World Cat Day in 2002. However, this holiday came to Russia somewhat later – the first Cat Day was celebrated in our country in 2004. The initiative to introduce this holiday into the calendar of fun and joyful events belongs to the Cat Museum and the magazine "Cat and Dog."

Cat Day in Russia is celebrated on March 1.

The date was chosen by the holiday's initiators: according to the editors of the magazine "Cat and Dog," March is the most cat-friendly time, so the first of the month is perfectly associated with cats.

There is also International Cat Day — read on our website.

Why is Cat Day celebrated in Russia?

In Russia, National Cat Day is not just an excuse to celebrate pets but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of caring for them. The main goal of the holiday is to remind people of the importance of caring for, being responsible, and supporting homeless animals.

On this day, cat owners often give their furry friends extra attention: they buy treats, new toys, and update their beds and scratching posts. Active participants organize photo sessions with cats, and charities hold fundraisers and food drives for shelters.

World Cat Day

Although National Cat Day is celebrated on different days in different countries, it is celebrated with equal pleasure by all lovers of furry pets.

March 1 – the date of Cat Day in Russia. On this day, our country traditionally hosts various animal shows, where the most beautiful and unusual felines are awarded.

October 29 – Cat Day in the USA. In the States, this holiday is unofficially considered a national one – it's commonly referred to in the press as "National Cat Day." Celebrated since 2005, it was initiated by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Other public organizations that claim to be animal lovers also join in the celebration. And, of course, Cat Day doesn't go unnoticed by businesses – from pet food manufacturers to pet stores. Discounts, promotions, and new items created specifically for pampered pets – all of this is invariably present in every cat department.

February 22 – a cat festival in Japan. The date was chosen for a reason: it turns out that cats in Japanese don't say "meow-meow," but "nyan-nyan-nyan" (exactly that, three times). The word "nyan," in turn, sounds very similar to the word for "two" in Japanese. So, it turns out that a cat says "two-lwa-lwa," or February 22nd – February 22nd. On this day, Japan celebrates the Cat Festival, where pets (and the Japanese are perhaps the most cat-loving nation in the world) are rewarded for their habits – any unusual behavior on the part of cats is welcome. Incidentally, Japan was the first country to celebrate Cat Day, long before World Cat Day was established. In 1987, a cat food company surveyed its customers to see if they would be happy with a holiday honoring pets. The results of this survey led to the first Cat Day. The holiday was so popular with the residents of the Land of the Rising Sun that it immediately became an annual event – starting at the end of the last century, Cat Day has been celebrated there regularly.

February 17 – Cat Day in Poland. A festival is also held in Poland on this day in honor of beloved pets. However, it's a different format – its participants are people pretending to be cats and kittens. Those who wish to take part in the performance play with large balls of yarn – and as a result, each "kitten" ends up wrapped in woolen thread from head to toe, becoming entangled in the improvised toy.

November 17 Cat Day in Italy. On this day, black cats—those pitch-black, without a single white spot—are especially revered. These animals were once considered the servants of witches and accomplices of evil spirits and were exterminated by the Inquisition. Today, black animals are honored guests at the cat festival.
