Dexafort for cats

Dexafort is an effective anti-inflammatory medication used in cats for inflammatory conditions of various origins. This hormonal medication is generally well-tolerated by pets, but it has a number of contraindications, so it should not be used without a doctor's prescription. The formula for this medication, popular among veterinarians, was developed by Intervet.

General description

The medication is available as a white suspension intended for injection. It may separate during long-term storage. This is considered normal, so do not discard the medication if it separates. The suspension is packaged in clear glass bottles with a capacity of 50 ml. For most cat owners, purchasing such a large bottle is impractical, as most of the medication is discarded. However, the medication is not sold in other containers. Each bottle is packaged in a cardboard box and comes with instructions, which must be read before use.

Dexafort for cats

The main component of the anti-inflammatory drug, which determines its action, is dexamethasone. The medicinal solution also contains auxiliary components that help preserve the active ingredient's properties for a long time.

Please note! The unopened suspension can be stored for 3 years from the date of manufacture, but once opened, it is only suitable for use for 28 days. Please note the date you opened the package or mark it with a sticker, as the medication must be discarded after the expiration date. It cannot be used to treat cats or other animals.

Operating principle

Dexamethasone It is a synthetic analogue of cortisol, a natural hormone found in animals. Therefore, Dexafort has the following properties:

  • relieves inflammation;
  • eliminates swelling;
  • stops the development of allergies.

When ingested, it inhibits the synthesis of substances involved in inflammatory processes. Furthermore, the medication stimulates the production of substances with pronounced anti-edema properties. The medication suppresses the immune system and alters T-lymphocyte dynamics, affecting their activity.

A distinctive feature of this anti-inflammatory drug is its combination of rapid action and long-lasting effect. This is achieved by containing two different forms of the active ingredient. Dexamethasone disodium phosphate is absorbed immediately after administration, so the drug's effect begins almost immediately. Dexamethasone phenylpropionate, on the other hand, is absorbed slowly, ensuring a prolonged effect. Furthermore, the drug is non-addictive.

The medication reaches its peak blood level within 1 hour. High concentrations can persist for up to 4 days. Another unique feature of the medication is its 100% bioavailability. In most cases, a single injection is sufficient to relieve inflammation.

Please note! Despite its high effectiveness, Dexafort should only be used after consultation with a veterinarian. If used incorrectly, it may negatively impact the functioning of internal organs and systems.

Price

The price of a 50 ml bottle of Dexafort varies between 950 and 1050 rubles depending on the pharmacy. This imported medication is sold in many veterinary pharmacies, so purchasing it is easy. You can also order it online.

Indications for use

The medication is typically used to treat inflammation, including those of allergic or autoimmune origin. The instructions indicate that Dexafort is prescribed for cats to treat the following conditions:

  • at acute mastitis;
  • for bronchial asthma;
  • for joint diseases (arthritis, arthrosis, etc.);
  • for allergic dermatitis;
  • for eczema.

The drug is also effectively used to relieve post-traumatic shock resulting from an accident, fall from a height, or other mishap.

How to apply

Since Dexafort is a suspension that can separate, shake the bottle well before use. Cats are injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously. A single injection is usually sufficient, as the drug's effectiveness lasts for several days. If the disease is advanced, a repeat injection may be necessary after 7 days. Only a doctor can determine the need for a repeat injection.

The dose of the hormonal anti-inflammatory drug is calculated based on the pet's weight. Only 0.05 ml of suspension is required for each kilogram of weight. If the inflammatory process is complicated by pathogenic bacteria, Dexafort is used in combination with antibiotics. The doctor usually selects broad-spectrum antibiotic actions.

Restrictions

This highly effective medication has an extensive list of contraindications. Dexafort is not recommended for use during the early stages of pregnancy, as it can cause congenital defects and anomalies. The medication is also strictly contraindicated during the third trimester, as it can cause premature labor, which can result in the death of the fetus.

You should not use hormonal medication if you have the following illnesses:

  • at corneal ulcers;
  • in case of kidney dysfunction;
  • for osteoporosis;
  • at heart failure;
  • for ulcers in the digestive system;
  • in the presence of viral infections;
  • for fungal diseases;
  • with Cushing's syndrome (excessive production of cortisol by the adrenal glands).

Dexafort, like other glucocorticoids, is an insulin antagonist (acts in the opposite way) and therefore should not be used in diabetes mellitus. It should also not be used in conjunction with vaccines. It suppresses the immune system, increasing the risk of complications. Some medications reduce the effectiveness of the drug, so be sure to inform your veterinarian of all medications your pet is taking.

Fungus in a cat

Please note! Pets with hypersensitivity may develop anaphylactic shock after an injection of an anti-inflammatory drug. To prevent this, the cat is first given an anti-allergy medication or an adrenaline injection.

Side effects

When used according to the instructions, Dexafort for cats does not cause any side effects. However, prolonged use or incorrect dosing may result in Cushing's syndrome. The following symptoms may indicate this:

  • excessive thirst;
  • baldness;
  • increased appetite;
  • weight loss;
  • urinary incontinence;
  • muscle weakness.

The cat eats a lot

The hormone can cause osteoporosis. If you experience any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor. After an examination, they will prescribe symptomatic treatment if necessary.

Owner reviews

Maria, owner of a 4-year-old cat:

"Our cat developed severe itching after her first heat. The vet said it was due to hormonal imbalances. We decided to spay her, but that didn't solve the problem. Over time, she started scratching again until it bled. Then we prescribed Dexafort. At first, two injections lasted for six months, but then we had to administer the treatment more frequently. Now we administer the medication three to four times a year. The medication is effective; the cat stops scratching completely by the second day."

Irina, owner of an Abyssinian cat:

"Our cat's first asthma attack was a real shock for us. The doctor prescribed Dexafort. It works quickly and effectively. Within a couple of hours, the cat was playing and eating without any problems. We're currently using other medications for treatment, but we always keep this medication in our first aid kit in case of an asthma flare-up."

Valentina, owner of an 8-year-old cat:

"We used Dexafort to treat allergic dermatitis. The main symptoms disappeared within a day. The itching seemed to disappear, although before the injection, Malysh was scratching his sides until they bled. It's a good product, but the doctor warned that it's hormonal and shouldn't be used frequently. And the price is steep. It's a shame we had to throw away almost the entire bottle of the medication, as it can't be stored for long."

Veterinarian Reviews

Marina Nikolaevna, a veterinarian with 16 years of experience:

"Dexafort is a truly essential medication. For animals with severe itching, it's a real lifesaver. It's highly effective. However, I use it very rarely because hormonal medications can have adverse effects on a pet's health. I advise pet owners not to use it without a doctor's prescription."

Vadim, a veterinarian with 8 years of experience:

"An expensive but effective medication. However, it's definitely not suitable for long-term use. It's a hormonal medication, after all. Any hormonal medication has contraindications and side effects. But Dexafort is excellent for emergency use. It quickly relieves itching and other symptoms of dermatitis."
