Darling - dog food

A dog's physical health and emotional well-being directly depend on proper nutrition. Monitoring the quality of their diet is especially important when feeding commercial dog food. According to the French company Purina, its Darling dog food provides a complete, all-day menu for all breeds. This product is one of the most common budget-friendly dog food options and is in high demand among dog owners.

Feed composition

The manufacturer does not disclose the detailed composition of the dry dog food "Darling", but only indicates that it contains:

  • cereal crops;
  • meat and offal;
  • fats and oils.

Therefore, it's difficult for consumers to judge how well this product can satisfy their pet's daily nutritional requirements. It's clear that the main ingredient is grains, meat accounts for only 4%, and the amount of by-products remains unknown.

Most veterinarians leave less-than-flattering reviews of Darling dog food, believing its ingredients to be too poor. However, according to Purina, a well-known European pet food manufacturer and part of the highly respected Nestlé group, the ingredients are truly high-quality, as each ingredient provides targeted benefits for dogs:

  • fiber – improves digestion;
  • fatty and oily substances have a beneficial effect on the skin and coat;
  • Calcium – increases bone strength.

The formula also includes the essential vegetables and legumes for such foods, and is enriched with vitamins and minerals. However, it also contains harmful additives—dyes, preservatives, and antioxidants—the names of which are not disclosed.

Pros and cons

When evaluating Darling pet food, it's important to remember that it's a low-price product. Therefore, compared to other similar products, this food doesn't look bad at all.

Its main advantage is its low price and widespread availability. This brand's food is available in almost all dog food stores and is always sold at a low price.

Moreover, despite its poor, yet not entirely clear, composition, Darling outperforms most other economy-class foods in the following parameters:

  • it contains a little bit of real meat, while almost all analogues contain only offal of unknown quality;
  • the formula contains carrots and peas – sources of fiber and complex carbohydrates that supply the body with energy, while other economy foods do not contain vegetables at all;
  • Darling's dry granules are enriched with vitamins A and D, the amount of which is on average 1.5 times higher than in other products in this category.

Therefore, it's recommended to buy Darling dog food only if you're only choosing from budget-class options. If you have the option of purchasing a more expensive, and therefore higher-quality, food, you should avoid it.

Darling Dry Dog Food

The feasibility of this decision is supported by a wide range of other drawbacks of Darling. In addition to the poor composition and the lack of a specific list of ingredients on the packaging, Darling dog food, according to veterinarians, has the following shortcomings:

  • Excessive amounts of grains in the diet can disrupt the digestive system and cause an allergic reaction;
  • The dyes and preservatives present in the recipe also contribute to this;
  • The stated dosage of vitamins is not enough to satisfy the daily requirement of even a small dog.

For this reason, Darling food can be introduced into the pet's diet, but not as a complete component, but only as a supplement to food with a higher nutritional value.

Darling line

The range of dry food from the Purina company includes only 2 varieties:

  • from meat;
  • from poultry.

Both options are supplemented with vegetables and are designed for feeding any dog aged one year and older who requires vigorous exercise. A 10 kg bag of Darling dog food costs 1,000 rubles, while a 2.5 kg bag costs 300 rubles.

In addition, several types of canned dog food are produced under the Darling brand:

  • rabbit/turkey;
  • chicken/turkey;
  • meat/liver.

Darling canned dog food

This product is recommended by the manufacturer as a component of the diet for adult pets on natural feeding. The canned food is intended for independent feeding and does not require supplementation. This is due to its richer composition, which contains twice as much meat. Each meat component accounts for 4% of the total meat content, meaning the canned food contains a total of 8% meat. Additionally, the recipe contains the same amount of pasta and sugar.

Furthermore, it's recommended to buy this dog food in fairly large quantities for another reason. Darling not only has a poor composition, but also very low nutritional value and is poorly digested, significantly increasing its consumption. According to owner reviews, the consumption rate for this product is much higher than for more expensive and high-quality foods, as pets eat large quantities and are unable to satisfy their hunger.

Despite all the shortcomings, reviews of Darling dog food are quite varied. Along with the negative opinions, mostly from veterinarians, there are many positive responses from dog owners. This diversity of opinions is due to the fact that veterinarians carefully examine the ingredients and base their conclusions on a scientific approach. For most dog owners, the deciding factor is the price and ease of feeding dry food.

In other words, for a small fee, they provide their pet with regular nutrition, which the manufacturer calls "complete," so they don't have to worry about anything else. But this approach is fundamentally flawed. After all, a dog should receive a truly balanced diet with all the necessary nutrients. Therefore, if high-quality food is not available, it's important to include not only dry food but also canned food, and especially natural food, in your dog's diet.

Owner reviews

Victoria, the dachshund's owner:

"I've been feeding my beloved dachshund Darling for over a year now. I haven't noticed any negative effects on her health or her reaction to the food. It's highly digestible and consists of small, easy-to-chew kibble. We switched to dry food because of an allergy our dachshund had when we were on a natural diet. She hasn't had any negative reactions to this product."

Lyudmila, pug owner:

"I was completely disappointed with Darling food. When I bought it, I was surprised – why was the product of a well-known French company so cheap? Now it's clear. This isn't dog food, it's pure chemicals. Well, maybe with a little grain. Instead of gaining the weight she lost after her illness, my Alma lost even more weight. And the situation didn't improve even when I tripled the portions. Furthermore, the kibble resembles a multicolored mosaic with a very unpleasant odor, indicating the presence of dyes and who knows what else."

Veterinarian Reviews

Maxim, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Darling" isn't a sustainable option. Yes, it's cheap, but that's where the benefits end. You might as well buy toilet paper; it's even cheaper and just as effective. It contains very little nutritional value, much less health benefits. It also contains artificial flavor enhancers and antioxidants. I'm not sure this food is safe, nor that it will make your pet sick within six months. If at all possible, buy higher-quality food."

Klavdiya, a veterinarian with 8 years of experience:

"I can't say that Darling is dangerous to health, but it certainly doesn't meet a dog's nutritional or energy needs. For a carnivore, 4% meat in the diet, especially if it's processed to a dry state, means practically nothing. Therefore, this food is absolutely not suitable for daily feeding, except perhaps as a supplement in emergency situations."
