Heart disease in dogs

In this section, we've collected all types of heart disease in dogs, including their symptoms, treatments, and prevention methods.

Detecting heart disease in a dog isn't easy. A pet can't complain about pain or discomfort. Only an attentive owner can notice that something is wrong with their beloved dog.

Symptoms of heart disease in dogs can appear at any age. While older pets are more likely to suffer from heart disease, even young puppies can be affected. Only a veterinarian can make a definitive diagnosis. However, even a veterinarian cannot make a definitive diagnosis without specialized examinations. A cardiograph, ultrasound, and, less commonly, X-rays can be helpful.

Only a veterinarian should prescribe treatment for a dog with heart disease. Following the advice of other dog owners can only cause further harm to your pet. You may give medications that are contraindicated for your dog's heart condition. A course of treatment is necessary.

It's also worth remembering that some breeds are predisposed to heart disease. If your pet falls into this risk group, you need to closely monitor their health. Visit a veterinarian specializing in cardiology at least once a year (it's best to find one in advance and see one so they're aware of your dog's health issues).

Dogs have many heart conditions: myocarditis, pericarditis, endocarditis, infarction, cardiomegaly, ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure, valvular and cardiac defects, and many others. Some of these are present from birth, others develop throughout life (not necessarily in old age), and still others are caused by an infectious disease. Treating a dog with heart disease is not easy, but if done correctly, your little one can live a long and happy life.
