Baytril for cats

Baytril is an antibacterial medication used for cats. Its main advantage is its broad spectrum of activity, which is why it is prescribed for a variety of illnesses caused by bacteria and fungi. The medication is manufactured by the renowned German company Bayer, which has a long history.

Composition and release form

The antibiotic is produced as an injectable solution. It is described as a clear, colorless liquid. It is packaged in sealed ampoules or clear glass vials, sealed with rubber stoppers to maintain a hermetic seal.

The active ingredient of the drug is enrofloxacin. Pharmacies offer solutions with different concentrations of the active ingredient: 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The least concentrated 2.5% solution is usually used for treating cats, as other solutions make it difficult to calculate the correct dosage for a small animal.

Additional components of the drug are:

  • butyl alcohol;
  • potassium hydroxide;
  • purified water.

Properties and operating principle

Baytril has a broad antibacterial effect. It also has the ability to kill fungi. The drug is effective against the following types of bacteria:

  • proteins;
  • streptococci;
  • salmonella;
  • staphylococci;
  • clostridia, etc.

The drug is successfully used to destroy Haemophilus influenzae infection, as well as microorganisms that can cause diseases of the digestive, genitourinary and respiratory tracts.

The antibacterial agent works by blocking the production of an enzyme in harmful microorganisms that is responsible for DNA formation. Damage to DNA prevents bacterial reproduction and promotes their rapid death.

At the injection site, the drug is rapidly absorbed and reaches virtually all organs and tissues through the bloodstream. The antibiotic acts quickly—its maximum blood concentration is reached within just half an hour. The drug maintains its effectiveness for 24 hours. It is eliminated from the body, mostly unchanged, through urine and bile.

The antibacterial agent is classified as a moderately dangerous drug, as it does not have a hepatotoxic or embryotoxic effect and does not accumulate in the body.

Price

A 2.5% Baytril solution for cats is typically sold in 100 ml bottles, with each bottle costing approximately 350 rubles. The medication can be purchased without a prescription at any veterinary pharmacy or online.

Indications for use

According to the instructions for use, Baytril is prescribed to cats for the treatment of the following pathologies:

  • for respiratory diseases and diseases of the respiratory system;
  • for gastrointestinal tract disorders caused by bacteria;
  • for salmonellosis;
  • for diseases of the genitourinary system;
  • with streptococcosis;
  • with colibacillosis;
  • in septicemia;
  • in mixed infections.

Sad cat

The drug is also used for secondary infections, abscesses, purulent inflammations and other pathologies whose pathogens are sensitive to the active substance.

Instructions for use

Baytril injections are administered to cats subcutaneously. The dosage is calculated based on weight: 0.2 ml of a 2.5% solution is required for each kilogram of body weight. Injections are administered once daily. Treatment typically lasts 3-5 days, but may be extended to 10 days in severe cases or with complications. If the animal does not improve within 3-4 days of treatment, repeat testing is performed to determine the sensitivity of the microorganisms to the drug. If necessary, an antibiotic with a different active ingredient is selected.

The antibacterial medication regimen should not be violated or injections missed, as this will reduce the therapeutic effect. If an injection is missed, it should be administered as soon as possible and then the previously prescribed regimen should be resumed. Increasing the dose or taking any other measures is not necessary.

Beautiful cat

Baytril, like any other antibiotic, can kill not only harmful but also beneficial bacteria. Therefore, after a course of antibacterial therapy, it is recommended to give your cat food supplements or medications containing probiotics and lactobacilli to restore the intestinal microflora.

Contraindications

It is strictly forbidden to give antibiotic injections to kittens during the growth period. The active substance can disrupt this physiological process, leading to problems with physical development. Other contraindications for the use of antibacterial agents include:

  • diseases of the nervous system;
  • convulsions;
  • problems with cartilage tissue;
  • lactation;
  • pregnancy.

The drug should not be used in cases where the disease is caused by bacteria resistant to fluoroquinolones (Baytril belongs to this group of antibiotics), or in cases of intolerance to the ingredients, which occurs individually in some animals.

Please note! Baytril should not be combined with other antibiotics, including macrolides, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and others, as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Possible side effects

The instructions state that Baytril does not cause side effects in cats when administered at the correct dosage, although in practice the situation is different. This antibiotic is a potent drug, so it sometimes causes the following side effects:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • indigestion;
  • apathy and other behavioral disorders;
  • weakness;
  • refusal to eat.

It is recommended to administer the medication slowly and in small doses to one site. Failure to follow this recommendation may result in painful lumps forming at the injection site, which will cause discomfort to your pet. An abscess may develop at this site.

If an animal is intolerant to any of the components, there is a risk of developing an allergic reaction. This can manifest itself in various ways, from a rash to breathing difficulties. If antibiotics containing enrofloxacin have not previously been used for treatment, the animal should be observed closely during the first injection. If an allergic reaction occurs, the antibacterial agent should be discontinued. The animal should be prescribed antiallergic medications and medications to relieve any symptoms.

Storage features and safety measures

Storing the medication is easy, as no special conditions are required. Simply select a dry location protected from direct sunlight. The air temperature should be between 5 and 25˚C. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets, so it's best to place the medication on the top shelf of a cabinet or other similar location. Even in a sealed bottle, do not store the antibiotic near food or pet food.

Please note! Once opened, this medicine is only suitable for use for 28 days. After that, it must be discarded.

When using Baytril for medicinal purposes, the rules for working with veterinary drugs must be observed:

  1. After contact with the medicine, wash your hands with soap.
  2. If the drug comes into contact with mucous membranes or epidermis, rinse them thoroughly with water.
  3. If any allergies occur, consult a doctor.

If you have hypersensitivity, take extra care and wear rubber or latex gloves. Discard any medication bottles. Do not use them for household purposes.

Analogues of Baytril

If you can't find Bayer's Baytril in your local veterinary pharmacies, you can look for domestic or imported equivalents.

Important! The active ingredient in Baytril injection solution is the broad-spectrum antibiotic Enrofloxacin, so it's important to look specifically for medications from this group.

Enrofloxacin-50

The drug is produced by AlpoVet as an injection solution (1 ml contains 50 mg of the active ingredient). The dosage for cats is 0.1 ml per kg of body weight, so it is best to purchase the drug in small 10 ml bottles. The shelf life of an opened bottle is 28 days.

Price for 100 ml – 450 rub.

Enrofloxacin 5%

The product, produced by the Spanish company Invesa, is a light-yellow injectable liquid. A 5% solution is used for cats and dogs, and a 10% solution is used for cattle. Each 0.1 ml dose of Enrofloxacin 5% contains 5 mg of the active ingredient, Enrofloxacin, which is equivalent to a dose per 1 kg of body weight.

Price for 100 ml – 490 rub.

Enroxil 5%

KRKA's injection solution contains 0.05g of enrofloxacin per milliliter. The dosage for small animals is calculated at 0.1ml per 1kg of body weight.

The price in veterinary pharmacies for 100 ml is about 550 rubles.

Baytril analogs for treating cats - injection solutions

Please note that you may find Baytril analogues with different dosages in pharmacies. These medications are intended for cattle, pigs, goats, and similar-sized animals. A prime example is Nitox 200.

Nitox 200 is a domestic analogue of Baytril from Nita-Pharm. It is a brown liquid sold in 50 ml glass bottles. Although the active ingredient is also Enrofloxacin, the dosage is inconvenient for cats—1 ml of Nitox 200 contains 200 mg of active substance, which is 40 times more, than in the previously described drugs!!!

Owner reviews

Olga, owner of a 5-year-old cat:

“We were prescribed Baytril for my cat with cystitis. We also took No-Shpa and Katozal"The drug was effective, and the cat recovered quickly. One drawback is that wounds appeared at the injection sites, which the cat constantly scratched, causing them to fester. They had to be additionally treated with Levomekol ointment."

Alena, owner of a 2-year-old cat:

"When the cat developed a fever and a cough, we took him to the vet. He diagnosed laryngitis and prescribed Baytril along with other medications. Just four injections and the illness vanished. However, the injections were accompanied by severe diarrhea, which required persistent treatment for several days."

Veterinarian Reviews

Alina, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"Baytril is a good and effective antibiotic. Subcutaneous injections in cats often cause tissue necrosis at the withers. Hair loss typically occurs in this area, and sometimes restoration of the coat is quite difficult. If wounds appear at the injection site, I usually select a different antibacterial agent."

Gennady, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:

"I consider Baytril one of the best veterinary antibiotics. However, like other antibacterial agents, it has side effects. I've repeatedly experienced various problems with injections, from sores on the withers to digestive problems. The medication is effective if chosen correctly."

  • Hello! I gave my two-year-old cat Baytril 2.5% injections for 5 days. He continues to scratch and lick his fur, and bald spots have appeared. What should I do?

    • Hello! Why did you administer an antibiotic, especially a rather complex one, for the itching? Did your pet have pyoderma? Abscesses? Deep scratches and, as a result, a bacterial skin infection? Baytril isn't a first-line drug for dermatological problems. Who prescribed it? Was the itching diagnosed? Have skin and intradermal parasites (fleas, ticks) been ruled out? Have helminths been treated? What about the diet? Are any cosmetic products (shampoos) being used? First, the cause of the itching is determined, eliminated, and then symptomatic therapy is administered.

  • Good afternoon

    Please tell me, can Baytril be added to drinks and in what proportions?
    I need to sell to a rabbit and a cat at the same time.
    Thanks in advance!

    • Hello! Yes, Baytril can be administered orally. Antimicrobials are used for all susceptible animals when clinical signs of illness appear or when an infectious disease is confirmed in one of the pets (provided that it was not possible to quarantine all animals in a timely manner). The dose for rabbits (and cats as well) is calculated strictly by weight! The dosage is specified in the instructions. If you want to add Baytril to water, only add the amount that will be consumed at one time! Dosing should not be spread out over the entire day.

  • Can Baytril and No-Spa be mixed in the same syringe? Do they need to be injected separately?

    • Hello! Yes, these medications should not be mixed together. It's generally best not to mix antibiotics with anything else, and even to take breaks between injections of other medications.
