An alternative to sterilization of cats

Sterilization is a surgical procedure that renders a male or female cat infertile. Although many owners resort to this procedure, it has its staunch opponents. Health considerations can also prevent a male or female cat from being neutered. For those unwilling to resort to this drastic measure, clinics offer alternative methods that perform the same functions. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, which should be thoroughly considered before making a final decision.

Chemical method

One of the most widely used alternative methods for suppressing the reproductive instinct is chemical sterilization. This technique is used equally successfully on animals of both sexes. It involves administering chemicals to the animal that dramatically reduce its sex drive. Some agents simply suppress the activity of the sex glands, while others completely stop them.

In most cases, the same substances are used for both females and males, so neither the medications themselves nor the dosages differ for both sexes. Two types of medications are used during chemical sterilization:

The undeniable advantages of this method include:

  • The absence of all the risks inherent in surgery. These include the possibility of infection, no recovery period, poor anesthesia tolerance, suture rupture, etc.
  • Reversibility. All reproductive functions can be restored at any time, giving the animal a renewed chance to have offspring.
  • The ability to administer medications at home without visiting a veterinarian.
  • Relative painlessness. Even with injections, the animal's sensations are incomparable to those of surgery.
  • No rehabilitation period.

The main disadvantages include:

  • The body's unpredictable reaction to high doses of hormonal drugs. Medical sterilization can have negative health consequences both immediately after administration and over time.
  • Frequent hair loss and excess weight gain.
  • The high total cost of medical castration or sterilization, which can be several times higher than the cost of the surgery.

The most dangerous consequences of using such drugs are the development diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction or tumor development.

This method is not recommended before the male's first heat or sexual maturity, as the animal's body is still developing and undergoing hormonal development at an early age. The use of harsh medications can seriously disrupt this process and cause disruptions in natural development.

Radiation method

This is a relatively new method that has only recently emerged. It involves directing ionizing radiation locally to the reproductive organs. This procedure suppresses sexual function for a period ranging from several months to several years.

When performing radiological castration and sterilization, the veterinarian's expertise is crucial, as the radiation dose is calculated individually for each animal. The weight, age, and health of the cat are taken into account. This alternative to spaying and neutering cats is only performed in modern clinics, as it requires expensive professional equipment.

The advantages of this method include:

  • quick results;
  • no damage to the skin;
  • low repetition rate;
  • Possibility of use at a young age (6 months – 1 year).

Among the disadvantages, the following points stand out:

  • high cost;
  • direct dependence of the result on the competence of the veterinarian;
  • severe side effects.

The effectiveness and reliability of this method, especially as an alternative to castration in male cats, makes it increasingly widespread.

Simulation of sexual intercourse

The most modern method, successfully used for male and female cats in the West, is not yet widespread in Russia. It consists of two parts:

  • direct simulation of sexual intercourse;
  • reception sedatives.

This alternative to sterilization or castration involves using a special tool, similar to a cotton swab, on the genitals. It generally produces better results in females, as they never make eye contact with the male during natural intercourse.

The advantages of this method include:

  • complete absence of side effects and negative impact on the pet’s health;
  • low cost;
  • Possibility of home use.

Disadvantages include:

  • low efficiency in some cases;
  • the need for several repeated sessions in a row over 5-10 days;
  • short-term effect.

In any case, it's important for cat owners to remember that using chemical or radiation alternatives to spaying and neutering shouldn't be a decision made simply because they're tired of listening to their pet's screams and tolerating their deteriorating behavior. This is absolutely unacceptable, as all hormonal processes have already begun, and their abrupt suppression is extremely detrimental to the animal's health, and in some cases, can even lead to disability. Repeated use of these methods during an active heat cycle is especially dangerous. The owner is responsible for the animal's life and must be aware of the risks of such decisions.

In any case, when using any alternative to spaying a cat, a thorough consultation with a veterinarian is necessary. Sometimes additional testing, including blood tests and auscultation of the cat's breathing and heartbeat, is required.
