Are pit bulls aggressive?
Beginning breeders planning to get a Pit Bull, hoping to acquire a playful companion and reliable guard dog, often have a host of questions. Are pit bulls really as aggressive as people say? Is it safe to keep a dog of this breed in the home? What determines an animal's aggression level, and can this factor be influenced?
Let's figure out what is true about pit bulls, what is just an exaggeration, and why these dogs are banned in many countries today.

History of the breed
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed of short-haired fighting dog with a history of over 300 years.

There are two versions of the origin of the pit bull.
First Some believe their ancestors were originally the Molossus, a herding breed popular in Ancient Greece. Proponents of this theory believe that the dogs' distinctive appearance and character were acquired through crossbreeding with a number of other popular European breeds after they were brought to England.
Second The most common theory is that the pit bull's ancestors are bullenbeissers—large mastiff-type dogs bred in ancient times specifically for bull baiting. After bull baiting was banned, thrill-seekers began organizing illegal dog fights, pitting dogs against each other in the ring rather than against the bull.

Many believe the answer to the question of whether pit bulls are aggressive lies in the breed's history. However, it's worth remembering that modern breed standards distinguish two subtypes that differ in both appearance and temperament:
- bullhead type has a more aggressive character, a wide and short muzzle, as well as a massive chest, which makes the dog somewhat clumsy;
- terrier type Its constitution is closer to the forms of a nimble and fast terrier, it has a calmer character, and also possesses excellent guard qualities.
Bad reputation
Today, the Pit Bull breed is considered one of the most dangerous and is banned in many countries. It's worth noting that historically, there is no evidence of this breed displaying unprovoked aggression toward humans.

Before 1980, there was only one known case of pit bulls attacking a person. However, no one blamed the dogs in this incident, as it was established that the owner intentionally set his 26 dogs on people and kept them half-starved.
However, in recent years, reports of dog attacks have become quite common. fighting breeds per person. And we're not just talking about the American Pit Bull. Other dogs with a bad reputation include:
- Akita;
- Argentine Dogo;
- American Bulldog;
- American Staffordshire Terrier;
- American Pit Bull Terrier;
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier;
- Bordeaux Dog;
- Bandog;
- Brazilian Mastiff;
- Japanese Mastiff;
- Bullmastiff;
- Bull Terrier;
- Rottweiler;
- Doberman;
- Ca-de-bo;
- Canary Dog;
- Kuvasz;
- Neapolitan Mastiff;
- Chow Chow;
- wolf crossbreeds and some others.
So why do dogs sometimes show aggression towards strangers and even their owners, and can pit bulls really be dangerous?
Scientists, professional breeders, and experienced dog handlers agree that pit bulls' genetic predisposition to aggression toward other animals and their fighting spirit do not necessarily make them potentially dangerous to others. Typically, the appearance of unruly animals is the result of improper training, abuse, or mental health issues.
Character and temperament
When you hold a cute pit bull terrier puppy in your hands, you will definitely not see him as a cruel and aggressive beast.

Breeders describe the temperament of most dogs of this breed as friendly and playful, devoted and obedient, loyal and responsible. In many families, pit bulls have also proven themselves to be excellent pet sitters and guard dogs.
However, it's important to remember that dogs (all dogs, not just fighting breeds) can harbor resentment toward aggressive and unfair owners, and can also suffer from loneliness and lack of interaction (with people or other dogs). Fighting breeds also require physical activity and emotional release. If these natural needs aren't met, the animal may become withdrawn, unsociable, and aggressive.

Training and education
A well-trained, socialized dog with a strong, stable psyche that has warm feelings for its owner will not show aggression towards people living in the same house with it.
According to experts, the most serious mistakes negligent owners make that can result in a dog becoming uncontrollable and dangerous are:
- complete lack of training;
- wrong approach to education;
- aggression towards a dog (physical punishment);
- encouraging aggression on the part of a dog towards other animals (cats, stray dogs) or people;
- intentional breeding of dogs that are aggressive towards humans.

Experienced trainers highlight the following basic rules that pit bull breeders should strictly follow:
- clear hierarchy (the owner is the leader);
- socialization of the dog from a very early age;
- strict adherence to the daily routine;
- uniform rules (prohibitions) and the requirement for their strict implementation;
- long walks twice a day and providing the animal with the necessary level of physical activity;
- regular training starting from 4 weeks;
- attending specialized schools (mandatory for inexperienced breeders).
Therefore, if we consider whether well-behaved pit bull terriers, whose owners pay sufficient attention to their pets, care for their needs, and take into account the breed's characteristics, are aggressive, it's safe to say that the percentage of dogs exhibiting behavioral issues is no higher than in any other breed. The only difference is that an aggressive 5-kilogram Chihuahua brings a smile to many people's faces, while a 30-kilogram pit bull is a real source of fear for its life.
Important! At the first sign of aggression or disobedience from your pet, seek help from experienced trainers who can help identify and address training issues and correct the dog's behavior at an early stage.
Sport
The best way to relieve physical and psychological stress for fighting breeds is through exercise. Regular exercise will not only help develop a beautiful frame but will also have a beneficial effect on the dog's character.
Among the most popular disciplines that can be recommended to pit bull owners are:
- agility (obstacle course);
- weight pulling (dragging heavy loads);
- Frisbee (more suitable for terrier-type dogs);
- patch and go (retrieving items);
- flyball (a combination of obstacle course and ball games);
- Canicross (cross-country running).

The statistics speak for themselves. Pit bulls are the leading cause of attacks on humans worldwide, and these attacks are unprovoked. And they're right to ban them; owners of these fighting dogs are typically young or unstable.

Please tell me how to stop a pitbull puppy from biting a child.

Hello! Train your puppy. Don't allow him to bite you during play (whether it's your hands, legs, or things). Don't hit or yell, but calmly reprimand him with the command "no" after EVERY attempt to bite. All family members should have the same training model. It's not just one who forbids it and another who allows it. If you can't handle it yourself, seek help from a dog trainer. Your puppy may be playing and getting carried away now, but this could become a problem later. Correct the behavior now, while you have the puppy.

This myth is fueled by the numerous undisputed victories of pit bulls in the fighting ring. However, the breed's original purpose was hunting, and only later, fighting. Today, breeders most often acquire pit bulls with the goal of being devoted and loyal companions and family members.

This is not a companion breed... you can never let a pit bull roam freely where other pets roam, simply because they are highly aggressive and have no inhibitions.
