Advantix for dogs is available as topical drops. World-renowned manufacturer Bayer produces products with pre-selected dosages for each weight category. The product kills fleas within 12 hours of application and protects dogs from reinfestation for up to a month. Advantix will also stop itching from insect bites within 3-5 minutes of the first application.
During the spring and summer, it is recommended to inspect your pet daily and remove any attached but dead ticks. Ideally, Advantix should be applied one month before the onset of warm weather (approximately February-March). The drops will repel ticks., including those that cause Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis. Start at the withers, gradually moving down toward the tail.
Avoid squeezing the entire bottle onto one area. This can cause the medication to soak into the fur and drip down. This also increases the risk of the dog licking the toxic product immediately after treatment. The instructions for Advantix for dogs state that the product is water-resistant. However, it will take at least two days for the product to be sufficiently absorbed into the skin. Do not bathe your dog until this time.

If a chemical burn appears on your pet's skin, it's a good idea to apply glycerin. Painful symptoms usually resolve spontaneously within a day or two after discontinuing Advantix treatment. However, if severe skin lesions develop, a prescription ointment and antibiotics may be necessary. If your dog continues to scratch severely, your veterinarian may also prescribe Benadryl to normalize the immune system and reduce histamine production. Benadryl can also help alleviate behavioral side effects.
Caution: Do not give Benadryl intended for humans to your dog without first discussing the dosage with your veterinarian.
If the dog is unable to recover from an allergic reaction, additional fluids will be required to maintain normal metabolism.
