Advantage for cats

Advantage for cats is used as an insecticide to control fleas, lice, and other ectoparasites. It is manufactured by the renowned German company Bayer, which has earned the trust of consumers over its history.

Composition and release form

The medication, in the form of drops for external use, is packaged in polymer pipettes. Depending on the intended use (for large or small cats), the volume is 0.8 or 0.4 ml. A cardboard package typically contains four pipettes.

The liquid is yellow or light brown in color. It has a distinctive, but not very strong, odor. The active ingredient is imidacloprid. Its concentration in the medication is 10%. The composition also includes the following additional components:

  • benzyl alcohol;
  • butylated hydroxytoluene;
  • propylene carbonate.

How Advantage Works

The active ingredient disrupts nerve impulse transmission, causing paralysis in parasitic insects. As a result, they die within a relatively short period of time. A unique feature of Advantage drops for cats is that the active ingredient is evenly distributed over the entire skin. It can accumulate in the fur, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles.

The medication begins working before fleas or lice begin biting your pet. Its effectiveness lasts for 4 weeks, so treatments should be repeated monthly. It targets not only adult fleas but also larvae and eggs.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Advantage for cats should be used in case of infestation with parasitic insects:

Price

Advantage flea drops for cats are more expensive than domestic alternatives. The approximate cost of one dropper is as follows:

Instructions for use

If an insecticide is used to kill insects, a one-time treatment is required. The presence of fleas and other external parasites is usually indicated by the following symptoms:

  • the animal is itching a lot;
  • becomes restless;
  • the hair falls out in clumps;
  • the beautiful shine of the coat disappears;
  • The animal's appetite may decrease. The animal will refuse to play and eat.

For preventative purposes, Advantage is applied to the animal once a month. If the cat is kept indoors and does not interact with other animals, prophylaxis can be administered every three months.

The dosage is calculated as follows:

  1. For animals weighing up to 4 kg, one pipette of Advantage 40 (0.4 ml) is required.
  2. For pets weighing from 4 to 8 kg, one pipette of Advantage 80 (0.8 ml) is needed.
  3. If the cat's weight exceeds 8 kg, then pipettes of different volumes should be combined, taking into account that 0.1 ml of the drug is needed for each kilogram of weight.

How to use

Before treatment, bathe your pet with flea shampoo. Allow the fur to dry completely before applying the product. Follow these steps:

  1. Take one pipette. Unscrew the cap. Turn it over and put it back on to break the protective seal.
  2. Hold the animal with your hands.
  3. Gently part the fur to allow the medicine to reach your pet's skin.
  4. Apply a few drops. For larger pets, apply the product in several places.
  5. The product should be applied in areas where the animal cannot lick it. The withers, the back of the head, and the area around the neck are ideal.

Features of application

To ensure Advantage for cats is effective and safe, follow a few simple guidelines and rules:

  1. Treatment should not be carried out if there are wounds, bruises, scratches or other injuries on the animal’s body.
  2. After applying the medicine, avoid swimming and accidental contact with water (getting caught in the rain, walking on wet grass, etc.) for the first few days.
  3. If there are several animals in the house, they should be isolated from each other on the first day so that they cannot lick the drug.
  4. In case of severe infestation, it is recommended to additionally treat the bedding and household items.
  5. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
  6. For treatment and prevention, the drug is used in equal doses.

Contraindications and side effects

Since the product is low-toxic and has no adverse effects on the body, it has virtually no contraindications. It should not be used on kittens under 8 weeks of age or in cases of individual intolerance to any of the ingredients. This may cause allergic reactions.

Owner reviews

Lyudmila, owner of a 5-month-old kitten:

"We adopted a sweet kitten from a friend. When we went to the dacha, I noticed he started scratching. I bought Bars drops, but they had no effect. Upon returning to the city, we went to the clinic. On the vet's advice, I used German drops. Within a few days, the kitten stopped scratching completely. There were no adverse reactions."

Galina, owner of a 5-year-old cat:

"I don't use antiparasitic medications because our cat doesn't leave the house and rarely even goes out on the balcony. One day, I noticed two fleas. I decided to take immediate action. I bought Advantage drops (recommended at the pharmacy). Three days later, I conducted a detailed inspection and found no fleas, so I can confirm the product's effectiveness."

Veterinarian Reviews

Sergey, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience, parasitologist:

"Advantage is considered a safe medication, but like any other insecticide, it can cause adverse reactions. Personally, I prefer to work with Frontline, so I always recommend it to my clients."

Karina, a veterinarian with 5 years of experience:

"It's a good and safe medication, as long as you don't exceed the dosage. I've heard some negative reviews (it causes side effects and can even be fatal), but I haven't encountered anything like that in my practice. The animals tolerated the medication well. The downside is that it's not effective against ticks. Additional measures need to be taken."
